Springfield Fire and Rescue responded to the call at 7:48 a.m., said Capt. Eric Shively. Contractors hit the gas line while putting in light poles.
The wind blew the natural gas southwest toward the cancer center, so employees evacuated, Shively said. Construction continued on the new hospital’s parking lot, away from the natural gas.
Lamb said crews from Columbia Gas worked to repair the gas line.
