Cancer center closed after natural gas leak

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield Regional Cancer Center was shut down Wednesday after contractors working on the new Springfield Regional Medical Center site hit an underground natural gas line on West North Street.

“As a safety precaution, the cancer center will remain closed for the rest of the day,” said Dave Lamb, Community - Mercy Health Partners spokesman. “Cancer center employees will call patients (Thursday) morning to reschedule appointments.”

Springfield Fire and Rescue responded to the call at 7:48 a.m., said Capt. Eric Shively. Contractors hit the gas line while putting in light poles.

The wind blew the natural gas southwest toward the cancer center, so employees evacuated, Shively said. Construction continued on the new hospital’s parking lot, away from the natural gas.

Lamb said crews from Columbia Gas worked to repair the gas line.
