Bridge project will close portion of Old Columbus Road

A portion of Old Columbus Road will be closed for the next few months for a bridge project.

The $509,000 replacement will begin today and will be closed to through traffic until about mid-May, Clark County Engineer Jonathan Burr said.

The truss bridge is located on Old Columbus Road between Bird and Grant roads, Burr said. Detours will be posted, he said.

The bridge has had repairs in the past, but it’s just above the legal load limit, Burr said.

“The goal is to replace them before they get load restrictions on them,” he said. “This is one of those that’s just over legal load right now. … It’s just getting to the point where it needs to be replaced.”

Clark County commissioners awarded a bid to Arcanum-based Brumbaugh Construction in December. The county will pay about $122,000 for the bridge work, while the remainder will be paid with Ohio Public Works Commission money.

There are about 240 structures considered to be bridges by the state in Clark County. About 80 bridges have been repaired or replaced in the last 10 years, Burr said.

The county will perform several small bridge repairs locally this summer.

“They’re not big ones like (Old Columbus Road),” he said.

The mild weather this fall has played a big role in maintaining bridges recently, Burr said.

“We’re getting a lot of repairs done right now that we usually can’t get done this time of the year,” he said.
