Boehner to make statement on Giffords tragedy Sunday

House Speaker John Boehner will make a statement Sunday morning from West Chester Twp. on the shooting of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and others in Tucson, Ariz.

Giffords was wounded when an assailant opened fire as the Arizona Democrat met with constituents outside a grocery store. At least five people were killed and several others were wounded, the Associated Press reported.

“I am horrified by the senseless attack on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and members of her staff,” Boehner said in the statement. “An attack on one who serves is an attack on all who serve. Acts and threats of violence against public officials have no place in our society. Our prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords, her staff, all who were injured, and their families. This is a sad day for our country.”

U.S. Rep. Mike Turner, R-Centerville who has served with Giffords on the House Armed Services Committee, released a statement saying he was saddened by the “act of senseless violence” against Giffords, her staff and constituents.

“My thoughts and prayers and those of my family are with Congresswoman Giffords, her family, and everyone impacted by this tragedy,” Turner said in the statement. His spokesman, Adam Murka, said Turner was not available for further comment Saturday afternoon.
