Park district seeks images for Veterans Memorial Park in Springfield

The National Trail Parks and Recreation District continues its $450,000 upgrades at Veterans Park, but district leaders say the project needs input from the community.

The memorial to veterans at the corner of Fountain Avenue and Cliff Park Road in downtown Springfield is a space for people to come and honor those who served the country, said Brad Boyer, deputy director of National Trail.

“It’s important if we have a park that’s honoring veterans that we do it in an appropriate way,” Boyer said.

The upgrades to the park will include, “monuments telling the stories of local veterans through images,” according to the National Trail’s website.

Boyer wants Clark County residents to submit photos of people who have served to be featured on the monuments, he said.

“We’re looking for images of local veterans,” he said, “from their active duty services or those that tell stories.”

The images will be chosen by a committee of local veterans, he said.

Some upgrades to the park have already been made, he said, with a plan to complete the project over the next few years. About $50,000 has been raised for the work done already, he said, but the district is seeking donations as well.

The project is solely funded by local donations, he said.

Boyer said information on donations or applications for images to be considered for the memorial can be found on the National Trail Parks and Recreation District website at ntprd.org.
