Want to lead New Carlisle? City council looks for residents to serve

There’s always a reassuring feeling after the election season is over. All the positions are filled, the rosters will be updated and the people’s business will settle into a new normal.

But that is not the case in New Carlisle.

At the most recent council meeting, Councilman Bill McIntire announced that he would be resigning his position on council because he and his family have moved out of town into the country. It wasn’t a long distance move, but it was far enough to take the McIntire household out of the city limits, which make him ineligible for a seat on council.

In an interview on the What’s Going On Facebook page, McIntire said he hated to leave but couldn’t turn down the opportunity that presented itself. He will live near the city and plans to still be involved with the historical society and other activities.

Until now, McIntire had co-hosted the page with Mayor Mike Lowry. After McIntire’s departure, Lowry plans to continue their work alone on the What’s Going On Facebook page.

Lowry said that in the future, videos will feature interviews with interesting people in the New Carlisle area.

Council had begun the process to replace McIntire when they got another bit of news on election day.

Councilman Lowell McGlothin has been successful in his bid for a seat on the Clark County Board of Commissioners and will soon have to leave council also.

Now the New Carlisle council members are looking for people to fill two seats on the council.

McIntire will be replaced first and as soon as possible, according to Lowry.

How does an interested New Carlisle resident apply to be on council? According to Lowry, it’s rather easy.

One simply needs to inquire in person at the New Carlisle City Building at 331 S. Church St. in New Carlisle. The necessary forms, instructions and applications will be available there.

The council will review applications and hold interviews before voting on a replacement council member. According to Lowry the vote required will be five out of the six council members, or a super majority.

Lowry also stated that he personally hopes the applicants will be individuals who are already involved in the community through volunteering or in other capacities.

For example Lowry attended meetings for quite awhile before filling out the application himself. He had a good basic understanding of the issues facing the community.

The city of New Carlisle website, www.NewCarlisle.net, also has a wealth of information for someone considering becoming a council member. The home page has a council packet and other items of interest.

Although he hasn’t officially resigned yet, County Commissioner-Elect Lowell McGlothin says will leave the New Carlisle City Council soon since he has to begin with the county on Jan. 3.

McGlothin believes his years on the New Carlisle City Council prepared him well for the job of county commission, although the county responsibilities will be much bigger.

“It was great training, but with a smaller venue,” he said. “I’ll be up to speed because I’ve been doing similar work for 15 years.”

New Carlisle City Council meetings are held in the Shelter House at Smith Park on the first and third Mondays of every month. Meetings start at 7 p.m.
