Springfield crews remove 800 dead animals from roads each year

The city of Springfield is constantly working on projects that will increase the quality of life for members of the community. This week the city would like to remind residents to please report any dead animals located on city streets so that they can be properly disposed.

Throughout the course of the year, crews from the city of Springfield’s Service Department properly dispose of more than 800 dead animals, domestic and wild, through the Humane Society Serving Clark County. The city strives to promptly remove animal carcasses from city streets before they become a nuisance or hazard.

The Humane Society cannot accept deer, so the city operates a Class II composting facility to dispose of approximately 25 deer each year. The site is licensed through the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and regulated by the Clark County Combined Health District.

Residents can report a dead animal in the roadway by calling the Springfield Service Department at 937-525-5800 or by using the Report a Concern feature on the city’s website at www.springfieldohio.gov.

For removal of a deceased family pet, residents should place the animal in a bag, call to schedule a removal and place it near the curb once the removal is scheduled.

Jim Bodenmiller is the Springfield city manager.
