Springfield students to stage escape rooms


Anyone can try to break out during an escape room fundraiser put on by the Springfield High School choir and orchestra on Friday and help raise money for a Disney spring break trip.

The musical groups have been invited to perform a mini-concert at Disney World in Florida and have started to raise money to pay for the trip.

Escape rooms are games where clues are hidden throughout a room and players must find and figure out different combinations and codes to unlock it and escape before time runs out. They have become increasingly popular over the last couple years.

The event will start at 5 p.m. Friday and last until 10 p.m. at Springfield High School. There will be four rooms and games will start on each hour and last for 45 minutes. The cost is $10 per person.

“We are hoping as many people come out as possible,” choir director Emily Fowler said. “Each room can have 10 to 12 person capacity.”

Players can pick from four different types of rooms. The themes are lost in time, art heist, plane crash/hostage and Disney Villain Takeover. The groups wanted to have a Disney-themed room, Fowler said, because the money is going toward their trip to the theme park in Florida.

The escape room kits the district owns have been utilized several times already but it will be the first time they’ve been used to raise money, Career ConnectED Program Coordinator Rene Stratton said.

Springfield teachers and staff played with them before the beginning of the year for team building and the kits allow teachers to adjust clues so that they can use them as a learning tool in the classroom, Stratton said.

“We have had six or seven different teachers use it in their classroom already,” she said. “The kits hit all the soft skills — students are learning to collaborate and work together as a team, to problem solve,” she said.
