A teachers group is offering $1,000 scholarships to students from the area who are going to school to become teachers.

The Clark County Retired Teachers Association will be giving out multiple scholarships this year, Jerry Laub said.

“We have money for three, we may have a fourth one,” he said. “We will have to see how fundraising in the spring is.”

The scholarships are for students from Clark County who are in their second or third year of college. Students are eligible for the award if they graduated from a public Clark County high school, regardless of the university or college they attend.

“This has kind of been the primary goal of this organization,” Laub said. “It goes back probably another 10 years. It’s to help future teachers get started with their schooling.”

Those who apply to win the scholarship also must have a GPA above a 2.5. Interested people should check out other rules and apply online at ccrtaohio.com by March 20.

Laub said it can be tough finding students eligible for the award because they are usually away from home. He encourages anyone who knows someone who might be eligible for the scholarship to alert them and ask them to apply.

“It is a bit of a challenge because a lot of other scholarships are given out right after high school,” he said. “This is students that are away from high school, away from home. They are on campus.”

The scholarships are paid for by fundraising, Laub said. The teachers have participated in a book sell and other events to get money for the scholarship. Also, the scholarships have two sponsors: Heartland Federal Credit Union and Dr. Brian Weber of Springfield.
