Where do you live? Springfield
What did you do before teaching at Hi-Point? I owned a diesel truck shop for 21 years.
What do students do in the diesel program? Students learn maintenance and repair work on semi-trucks and engines including air and hydraulic brakes, air flow systems, transmission components, engine components, and engine tear-down, rebuilding and repair. They can also secure internships and school-to-work opportunities during the school year.
What's your favorite thing about teaching? My favorite thing about teaching is working with students that are interested in the diesel industry and are driven to succeed in this type of business.
What's been your greatest achievement as an instructor? My greatest achievement as an instructor was when one of my students won the SkillsUSA National competition in Kansas City in 2005. He was the first student from the OHP Diesel Program to win not only state but nationals as well. It was great to see him succeed and then continue on with his success after graduation.
What makes you proud of your students? It makes me proud of my students when I see them use the skills they've been taught at Ohio Hi-Point and are working in the diesel field. I have lots of success stories from students taking advantage of the learning opportunities at Ohio Hi-Point.
What’s your favorite thing about your job? Working with students.
In your opinion, why is career-technical education important? Career Tech Education saved me when I was in high school because I didn't learn in a typical classroom environment. Going to a career center was great for my education because I worked with my hands, did something I was interested in and gained a relevant education. There are so many students that can't learn sitting in a classroom all day. Career centers offer opportunities to explore a lot of potential careers and learn in a hands-on environment with advanced technology and industry-standard equipment. Career Tech sets students up for success in the job market with the skills and industry credentials, or at a college or university by earning college credit.
What's an interesting fact about you? I've had perfect attendance for 18 years
