Suspected marijuana shipment to Urbana derailed

A suspected marijuana shipment to Urbana never made it to its intended destination because the odor emanating from the small hole in the box attracted a police investigation.

Vandalia police confiscated the package that arrived April 16 at a FedEx facility on Deer Run Road in Vandalia and it is scheduled to be destroyed, according to a Vandalia Police Division incident report.

The manager at the FedEx facility intercepted the smelly box, which was headed to an address in Urbana. The manager said he noticed a small hole in the box and detected a “strong odor of cannabis.”

Police were called Monday morning, April 18.

According to the incident report, the box was opened to reveal its contents: six packages of marijuana candy, a marijuana cookie, two pre-rolled marijuana cigarettes, a vial of cannabis oil and a pill bottle-size container of marijuana buds.

The return address was the Oceanside Museum of Art, 704 Pier View Way, Oceanside, Calif.

The police division is not seeking prosecution because of a lack of jurisdiction, according to the incident report.
