Springfield nurse practitioner sentenced to prison on drug charges

A Springfield nurse practitioner has pleaded guilty to trafficking charges.

Douglas Shrewsbury, 32, pleaded guilty in Clark County Common Pleas Court on a charge of aggravated trafficking in drugs, aggravated possession of drugs and Medicaid fraud, according to online records.

Clark County Common Pleas Judge Douglas Rastatter sentenced Shrewsbury to three years in prison. He also ordered Shrewsbury to pay restitution in the amount of $29,082, the online records state.

Shrewsbury was indicted on multiple counts of aggravated trafficking in drugs and aggravated possession of drugs in July. He originally pleaded not guilty to the charges and was able to post $100,000 bail.

The board of pharmacy reportedly began its joint investigation with the Springfield Police Division in July 2017 due to allegations Shrewsbury was operating a pain management clinic without the proper license and was issuing prescriptions illegally.

Shrewsbury allegedly operated Springfield Primary Health Care on East High Street. The health care office is not closed.

In November 2017, search warrants were executed at his office and home in Springfield, according to the release. Prescription drugs and patient records were seized during the searches, the release states.

Rastatter sentenced Shrewsbury to three years on the trafficking offense and two years for the possession offense and 18 months for the Medicaid fraud. However, those sentences will run concurrently with one another for a total of three years, the online records state.

He will also be credited with time served.
