Springfield man sentenced in Sunoco gas station shooting

A Springfield man was sentenced Friday in connection to a shooting in broad daylight last fall at a Sunoco gas station.

Clark County Common Pleas Court Judge Douglas Rastatter sentenced 33-year-old Antoine Green to eight years in prison for felonious assault, as well as an additional three years because the crime involved a gun.

Green was found guilty of the charges on Tuesday.

Police said he fired several shots after a Sept. 13 dispute at the Sunoco station on Selma Road. He struck a male victim multiple times.

Key video evidence of the crime showed an unidentified person in a white SUV arguing with someone across the parking lot who was pumping gas.

Green got out of the back seat of the SUV and walked over to the other vehicle.

The video showed a man get out of that car and that was when Greene pulled out a gun.

He shot at the victim multiple times before taking off in the white SUV.

Court documents say the woman at the gas pump and the suspect have a child together.

The victim was the woman’s friend, but had no relationship to the suspect.

Springfield police spoke with the mother of Green’s child at the time. She told police the shooting took place after Green got into a dispute over visitation time with their son, according to an affidavit in the case.

“She said she walked in and saw that the father of her son was in line to pay for his drinks,” the affidavit says. “(She) stated that Green became upset, telling everyone in the store that she was keeping the child from him and just taking his money.”

The victim survived the shooting, and prosecutors said on Friday that he is recovering.

Green spoke briefly in court.

“I’ve said my peace and I understand the situation, the circumstances of my situation and I do apologize for my actions,” Green told the judge prior to his sentence being read.

Prosecutors asked the judge prior to sentencing for the maximum penalty in the case, which he granted. Clark County Assistant Prosecutor Brian Driscoll said the circumstances surrounding the case were alarming and his team was very pleased with the outcome of the sentencing.

“It’s a rare occasion that we have crimes on tape,” he said. “This individual was going to have a firearm in broad daylight, in a public place where patrons were around, his child was around, a school was around.”

Green’s 8-year-old child was in the car when the gunfire rang out.

Although the child wasn’t hurt, Driscoll said if one thing had gone differently — the situation could’ve been a lot worse.

The Sunoco gas station is next to a local park and playground and is across the street from the School of Innovation (the former Keifer Academy).

Green’s attorney, Matthew Barbato, declined comment after the sentencing.
