Springfield police wrote in an affidavit they began their investigation on May 9, 2018, when they were dispatched to Springfield Regional Medical Hospital for an assault.
The woman said she was attacked by Bennett, the affidavit says. She said it started with an argument that led to Bennett knocking his own mother to the floor. She said as she tried to help his mother up, he came at her, the affidavit says.
“(The victim) stated she was helping (her) off the ground when she saw Michael Bennett approaching aggressively,” the affidavit says. “(The victim) stated she put her right arm out to stop Michael Bennett, however, he proceeded to ‘drop kick’ her on the inside of her right bicep and side causing injury.”
The victim said she and her boyfriend, who is related to Bennett, attempted to leave but were attacked by a group of unknown suspects once they were in the car, the affidavit says. Bennett then punched the victim, according to the affidavit.
“(The victim) stated she does not recall what was in Mr. Bennett’s hand but he then struck her on the face with a single closed fist punch,” the affidavit says. “(The victim) stated her nose immediately began bleeding at which time she placed the car in gear and fled the area.”
Bennett had not been arrested on the charge, according to court records, until Friday. Springfield police said in an affidavit they saw Bennett sitting at a stop sign on Foster Street at East Main Street. They knew he had a warrant and attempted to stop him once they caught up to him at the intersection of East Columbia Street and Lagonda Avenue.
However, Bennett didn’t stop and continued driving and drove to a residence on Catawba Avenue.
“As we took him into custody Mr. Bennett stated repeatedly that he just wanted to get to his grandma’s house to see her before he went to jail,” the affidavit says.
Her address was listed on Catawba, the affidavit says. He was taken into custody and placed in the back of a patrol car.
A next court date in the case was not set Monday.
