Murder victim’s family mad suspect’s parents will be at birth

Taylor Brandenburg was shot to death while babysitting.

Now, her relatives are unhappy that a suspect indicted in Brandenburg’s death will be allowed to have her parents with her while and after she gives birth to her baby.

Montgomery County Common Pleas Court Judge Gregory Singer granted a motion by Kara Parisi-King to allow Keith and Krista Hankins to be in the delivery room at Miami Valley Hospital.

Keith and Krista Hankins were convicted of obstruction of justice and sentenced to community control for not telling police the whereabouts of Parisi-King. The motion states the couple will be the baby’s custodians.

“For them now to be convicted felons and now be at her bedside, it’s insulting to the family, and it’s hurtful and we are very much so bothered by that,” Jennifer Hickman, Brandenburg’s cousin, said during a protest Tuesday outside the courts building. “It’s very unfair that they would be treated with such care and compassion when Taylor was not.”

Parisi-King, 27, was indicted on two counts of complicity to commit murder, complicity to felonious assault, complicity to the discharge of a firearm on or near a prohibited premises and tampering with evidence.

Police said Parisi-King helped boyfriend Chuckie Lee get a semi-automatic pistol and transport him to 77 Huffman Ave., where Brandenburg, 20, was shot outside a residence where she was babysitting. A third person, Evans Cassell III also was charged in the case. Lee’s case is scheduled for trial in August and Cassell’s trial is set for October.

After fleeing from law enforcement, Parisi-King was apprehended at the Red Roof Inn in Fairborn.

Ashley Brandenburg, Taylor’s stepmother, said the family delivered a letter to Singer, who did not change his ruling.

“At this point, we feel like that’s disrespectful to us,” Ashley said. “We did talk to the prosecutor about it. He said there was nothing he could do on his end or that we could do.

“We talked to our victim advocate and she said that if we don’t like anything that the judge does, just don’t re-elect him next time he’s up for election. … It’s frustrating that nobody is looking at it for Taylor.

Court officials said Tuesday that Parisi-King — who has been in Montgomery County Jail on a $1 million bond — was being induced and expected to give birth at Miami Valley Hospital.

Parisi-King’s attorney has asked for a second competency hearing for his client. The hearing scheduled for Tuesday was continued.

“I think she’s delusional. She knows better. She knows what she done,” Hickman said. “She is competent to stand trial, in my opinion.”
