Save money by making costumes

Halloween is quickly approaching and if you haven’t already decided, it is time to start thinking about your costume.

If you are like me, you hate spending a ton of cash on an outfit you are only going to wear once. This is why I always choose to make my own costume. It is a great way to be creative, use items you already own and have a little fun in the process. Here are a few quirky ideas to help get your creative, budget-savvy juices flowing.

Static Cling

Wear a pair of sweat pants and a long-sleeve shirt all in the same color. Take a couple of socks, a pair of shorts and a few dryer sheets and safety pin them randomly onto your clothes. Make your hair frizzy and even attach a sock to your hair using bobby pins. Bada bing, bada boom, you are static cling! The bonus is that after Halloween you can easily remove the safety-pinned clothes and still use your shirt and pants. This costume costs just pennies.

Cloudy With a Chance of Rain

Wear gray pants along with a long-sleeve gray shirt. Take white cotton batting (also called fake snow), which you can get at any craft store, and tear it into pieces. Hot glue or safety pin these pieces randomly on the front and back of your shirt and pants. When you are ready to go out on the town, get a small toy squirt gun from your nearest dollar store. When someone asks what you are tell them you are cloudy, spray them with the squirt gun, and say with a chance of rain.

Bubble Bath

This is one of my favorites. I dressed up like this a few years ago. Take your laundry basket and place white poster board around the outside. Strap some ribbon around your basket so you can put it around your neck. Fill the basket with clear, light blue and white balloons of varied inflation sizes. Put on your favorite bathrobe and slippers, wrap your hair in a towel, put on a facial mask and you are ready to go. To add to the look, drape a washcloth over the side of the basket and glue a rubber duck to the edge.

When it comes to Halloween costumes you don’t have to be complicated or spend an exorbitant amount of money on them. Get creative. Look around your house. Look for ideas online. In the end, you will have more fun and save more money.
