How to create a secret book compartment

Do you have valuables you want to keep in your house, but want to hide in case of a burglary?

Recently, I gave you simple ways to secure your home, but now you can use this simple DIY project to hide important papers, jewelry, or other valuables within your home.

For just $0.99, this secret book compartment is an easy and simple way to give yourself some added security in your home.

You will need

Purchased:

Hardbound book, at least 2 inches thick — $0.99 from Goodwill

Items I already had around the house:

Mod Podge

Foam brush

Ruler

Pen

Xacto Knife

Directions

1. Leave the first page of your book and front cover loose. Using your Mod Podge, glue the outside edges of your pages together and the back page to the back cover. Apply multiple coats of Mod Podge to the edges of your book; let dry in between coats.

2. Once your book is glued together, measure a one-inch border around the top page of the glued section.

3. Use your ruler as a guideline and begin to cut out the inner part of your glued pages. Use your knife and cut all the way through the paper until you reach the back cover. Do not cut through the back cover.

4. Take the first page of the book (the one you left loose) and glue it to the top of the section you just cut. This will hide any pen marks you made and give your book a more polished look. Cut the same hole in the page you just glued.

5. Once the inside is completely cut out, apply two more coats of Mod Podge to all of the inside edges.

6. Once the Mod Podge is completely dry, you can fill the book with all of your prized possessions.

Tip

If you want to ensure that your book stays closed, simply place a thin piece of Velcro on the inside of the front cover and on the border around your opening.

This will secure your items in place so that they won’t spill out when you take the book of the shelf.
