Newlywed Tori Blevins says neither she nor her husband of 11 days is a huge cake fan — but they do like doughnuts, and they share many pleasant memories of stopping in at Bill’s Donut Shop in Centerville after Carroll High School football games.
“We both grew up in the Dayton area, and Bill’s donuts is such a big deal here,” Tori said.
So when it came time to order a wedding cake for their June 15 nuptials, the couple had an idea. How about a tower of Bill’s doughnuts with a small, iced wedding cake on top? They made the suggestion to Mandi Kinninger, founder of Sweet Mandi’s Bakery in Arcanum, who had made cupcake wedding cakes, but never a doughnut cake before, Tori said.
But at their wedding reception at The Steam Plant venue in downtown Dayton, the wedding cake, made from 25 dozen assorted Bill’s doughnuts and another five dozen doughnut holes, was a smash hit.
“Everyone loved it,” Tori said. “Our guests could just go up and grab their favorite doughnut.”
Angela Lemke, founder and owner of Angela’s Premier Event Designs, said doughnut-tower wedding cakes are becoming increasingly popular.
“We’ve had eight weddings in the last three weeks, and four of the eight had doughnut cakes,” Lemke said. “We’ve worked with Bill’s and with Dorothy Lane Market.”
Tori said she and her husband, Anthony Lehmenkuler, were pleased with their choice.
“It ended up being much more affordable than a regular cake,” Tori said. “And we ended up with two or three dozen doughnuts left over that our families split up.”
