“We want to engage people in history and this is an ideal place to do that,” said Jared Merriman, a GCP&T naturalist.

The 169-acre Indian Mound Reserve, just outside of Cedarville, has a rich history including the 30-foot high Williamson Mound, built by the Adena Indians between 500 B.C. and 100 A.D. From Massie Creek Gorge, which was carved out by the retreating Wisconsin Glacier 12,000 years ago, to a restored pre-1825 two-story log house, history abounds at Indian Mound Reserve. So, what better place to try your hand at throwing an atlatl, an ancient spear-throwing device?

“You can use a tool that the Adena and Hopewell would have used for hunting,” Merriman said. “And you can play the same games the pioneers would have played when their chores were done.”

Stilt walking, hoop rolling and ring toss are just a few of the pioneer activities that visitors can try. Or try you hand at a new dice game or an original board game called Earthwork. And if you work up a thirst, there will be fresh-pressed apple cider.

“I wanted to create an event that celebrates historic life and culture in Greene County,” Merriman said. “It’s a unique way for the public to engage with our parks and, ultimately, have a lot of fun.”

And the fun and games go modern-day with a challenge-filled, high-tech geocaching treasure hunt throughout the park. Participants can enjoy a scenic hike and have a chance to win door prizes upon completion.

There is more to the reserve than fun and games as Greene County Parks & Trails recently completed extensive renovations including new waterfall overlooks, rehabbed bridges, a concrete walkway and upgraded trails and park amenities. Visitors of all ages can enjoy the unique history and natural beauty of the park.
