O’Connors set to bring the 80s back to Springfield with adult prom

It’s prom season and unless you’re a teenager, chances are you won’t be shopping for a formal or tux this spring.

O’Conners Irish Pub wants adults to enjoy a prom in Springfield, too. And they don’t have to worry about finding an elaborate way to ask their date to it.

The pub invites the ladies to put on their blue eye shadow, spray on Aqua Net to pile their hair high and toss on their old formal with ruffled sleeves, and guys to put on a white or light blue tux with tails for its first 1980s flashback prom, 10 p.m. Saturday, April 21.

There will be no cover charge that night.

O’Conners co-owner Tina Ramsey said she’s wanted to put on this event since the pub’s first year in the current location. Late last year, she sat down with Chris Chilton, also known as DJ Chill, to correct this.

“We just said, ‘We’re doing it,’” Ramsey said. “We wanted to do something different and who can’t relate to the ‘80s?”

The spirit of the music will bring back the time when Madonna mixed with Night Ranger and Bobby Brown with Cyndi Lauper, to be spun at the event by DJ Chill.

The pub will transform into a high school gym with a mirrored ball. Visitors can see some decorations go up the days before the prom.

There will also be the chance to vote on prom king and queen and get drink specials, including a spiked punch created for the occasion.

Even the staff will get in on the fun and dress up like Madonna, Cyndi and Pat Benatar.

Ramsey said there will be a learning curve as this is the first such event, but she aims to make proms an annual occasion.

“We just want to have fun and relive some memories and maybe there will be some mini reunions,” she said. “We just want to do more stuff for adults.”
