A late local artist will be honored with a reception and exhibition in conjunction with the 11th annual Art Affair on the Square this weekend.

The artwork of Paul Reif will be celebrated 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Champaign County Arts Council Gallery, 119 Miami St. The public is invited to attend.

The exhibit will also be open during the Art Affair on the Square 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, July 18.

“The Arts Council thought it most appropriate to hold the memorial exhibit during the Art Affair on the Square because Paul was so much a part of the event,” said Heather Brackney, Champaign County Arts Council executive director. “A past poster artist, Paul was painting in the Arts Council Gallery at last year’s 10th Anniversary of the Art Affair.”

Brackney said that Reif was a self-taught artist who took up painting after retiring from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in 1990. He was a member of the Champaign County Arts Council, the Western Ohio Watercolor Society, the Springfield Museum of Art and the Ohio Plein Air Society.

He died in March.

Reif’s artwork will be on display at the Arts Council Gallery through July 24. Regular office hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
