He was the kid with the fiddle who grew up before the eyes of Springfield audiences, playing at events such as CultureFest, Holiday in the City and the Clark County Fair and numerous local bands.

Now he’s a college graduate who still can’t wait to pick back up his bow.

Tyler Detrick returns to the local stage to perform at the next Sanctuary Series event at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, at High Street United Methodist Church.

The event is free, but free-will offerings to support the series will be accepted.

Detrick began with classical training on the violin, but it was his grandmother, who he calls nana, Kay Clark, who inspired him to pick up the fiddle 11 years ago, playing the first time at the South Charleston Opera House.

“She’s from down South and taught me folk favorites, and I got into Irish music,” Detrick said.

He’s excited nana will join him onstage on keyboard, as well as Geoff Walker playing guitar, mandolin and autoharp.

Walker and Detrick played in The Demerits, a Celtic music band when they attended Cedarville University, where Detrick recently graduated from. Detrick is a Shawnee High School graduate.

There will be several folk tunes, including “Chicken Reel/Chinese Breakdown,” “Beggarman,” “FoggyDew/Jacky Tar,” “Joshua Fought the Battle,” “Shenandoah” and “Blackberry Blossom” during the 50-minute performance.

Detrick, who now works for Opportunities for Individual Change (OPI) locally, likes to pick up his fiddle when he can, especially in the area.

“I’m amazed at how many opportunities there are in Springfield,” he said. “Springfield really takes time to invest in the folks here.”

Following the performance, a meet-the-artist reception with Detrick will be held in the church commons.

Another Sanctuary Series performance will follow later in the month. The Wittenberg University Choir, postponed from Oct. 8, will sing at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22.
