Background/overview

Jimmy John’s hometown is Chicago. In the early 1980s he barely made passing grades in high school, yet he was determined to own a business once he graduated. After much research about food and location, Jimmy developed a menu with four sandwiches and received a loan from his father to open his first Jimmy John’s Sandwich Shop in 1983. Since then, Jimmy John’s company has flourished and is now operated as a franchise system. Its corporate headquarters is in Champaign, Ill.

Ted Clemans Jr. is from London, Ohio. He graduated from Wright State University in 2007. He was working with his father Ted Sr. in a managing/consulting business when he heard about Jimmy John’s franchise opportunity. He called its corporate office and learned that the Springfield area didn’t have a Jimmy John’s. Ted asked his father to join him in studying the prospect of becoming a franchisee. His father agreed to the venture and has become the “backbone” of their business.

The first Springfield Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwich Shop opened in October 2015.

The breads are made fresh daily at this location. However, there are no ovens in Jimmy John’s shops for serving heated or toasted food to customers. All meats, cheeses and vegetables are hand-carved fresh and served cold. Prepackaged items such as the Jimmy Chips have typically been on the store’s shelves for no more than three days. Ted Jr. says, “We are excited to be in Springfield and give them a quality product for a reasonable price.”
