They call it Celebration of the Arts, but this year it can alternately be known as Fiesta of the Arts.

The Champaign County Arts Councilโ€™s annual gathering fundraiser to support its programs through food and music will go figuratively go south of the border to also celebrate Cinco de Mayo, one of biggest party days of the year.

A taco buffet, mariachi music and other festive materials will combine with another annual Arts Council special annual event, the opening reception of the Fourth Juried Art Exhibition, starting at 5 p.m. Friday, May 5 at the Champaign Arts Council office, 119 Miami St., where it returns after a year away.

โ€œWe wanted to move it back to our office because we like to show the things we have available in our space, like the art exhibition,โ€ said Heather Brackney, Arts Council executive director.

Along with the food and music, there will be a photo booth manned by a professional photographer, cash bar and mini maracas to add to the atmosphere.

The social hour will kick things off at 5, followed by the meal at 6.

Another highlight will be live music by singer/performer Noah Back, who has a diverse set list, which can cover anything from folk music to Avril Lavigne and modern indie folk to spiritual songs.

The Juried Art Exhibition will boast more than 50 pieces from Clark and Champaign County artists in pencil drawings, paintings, sculptures, quilts and photography.

For the first time, artists can submit three to five pieces, and all work must have been created within the last two years. A special ceremony will open the exhibition at Celebration of the Arts.

Best in show and first through third places will be announced at the event, for which the winners will receive cash prizes.

The regular exhibition will open May 9 and run through May 19 during Arts Council office hours.

Brackney said tickets for Celebration of the Arts will be available in advance and at the door. All proceeds raised will go toward Arts Council projects.

Other upcoming Arts Council-sponsored events will include the start of the Sounds of Summer concert series starting in June and a Lego exhibit in July.
