Wittenberg Tigers beat Wabash for sixth straight victory

The Wittenberg Tigers won their sixth straight game and moved into a tie for second place in the North Coast Athletic Conference with a 76-62 victory against No. 24 Wabash on Wednesday at Pam Evans Smith Arena.

Wittenberg (18-5, 13-4) beat two ranked teams in back-to-back games. This victory against the Little Giants came four days after an 84-74 victory at first-place and 14th-ranked Wooster. Wittenberg lost to both teams in January in consecutive games: 96-83 at Wabash and 73-65 at home to Wooster.

Wittenberg and Wabash are tied for second place with one game to play. Wooster (19-4, 14-2) clinched the outright title with Wittenberg’s victory.

Both victories improve Wittenberg’s chances of earning an at-large NCAA tournament berth if they don’t win the NCAC tournament. They moved into fifth place in the Great Lakes Region after beating Wooster, which ranks third. Wabash ranks eighth.

Jordan Pumroy scored 14 points for Wittenberg. Senior Mitch Balser scored 14 in his last regular-season home game. Landon Martin and James Johnson each had 12 points. Jake Bertemes scored 11.

Wabash sophomore Jack Davidson made 3 of 3 free throws. His streak stands at 92. He’s two away from tying the NCAA all-divisions record.
