Wayne grad, MSU defensive tackle shows enthusiasm on Twitter

He just couldn’t help himself.

After a Sunday tweet saying it would be his last communication with followers before today's Michigan game, Michigan State defensive tackle Jerel Worthy (Wayne) broke his Twitter silence Thursday.

It was nothing inflammatory, nothing that could cause an uproar like, say, the tattoo on his enormous left arm of a Spartan warrior standing over a vanquished Wolverine.

“Two more days!” Worthy wrote, as if anyone connected with either of the schools in this heated college football rivalry needed a reminder.

Can’t blame Worthy for being excited, though. Unless the fourth-year junior pulls a stunner and puts the NFL on hold (he projects as a top-15 pick), today’s noon kickoff (ESPN) begins his last Michigan game. He’s 3-0 against the intrastate rival.

Whatever Worthy decides about his future, chances are he will announce it on Twitter, the favored medium of athletes and college students. Worthy tweets at the drop of a hat — or a perceived insult.

In May, he heard former Michigan defensive back (and current Cincinnati Bengal) Morgan Trent say Michigan didn’t take the Spartans seriously, so he tweeted, “Who the (heck) is Morgan Trent and what is (his) weak (butt) doing now. He setting them boys up down the road for another (butt) whoopin.”

In July, Worthy chided ESPN on Twitter for making Wisconsin the favorite to win the Big Ten.

On the field, Worthy is at the heart of the nation’s top-ranked defense (173.4 yards allowed per game). In five games, he has 10 tackles (four for losses), two sacks, a fumble recovery and a blocked kick.

From all reports, first-year Michigan coach Brady Hoke (Fairmont East) seemed more concerned this week about what Worthy brings to the field athletically rather than anything depicted on his body or flying through cyberspace. Hoke knows who the 5-0 Wolverines need to neutralize if they intend to stay unbeaten.

Antoin Campbell (Springboro), a redshirt freshman running back at the University of Saint Francis, was named Mid-States Football Association Mideast League offensive player of the week after setting a school touchdown record with five in a 42-41 double-overtime win over Walsh in Canton last Saturday.

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound Campbell tied a USF record with four rushing TDs and gained 159 yards on 30 carries. He scored the tying TD in the second overtime, caught three passes (including one for a 61-yard TD) and racked up 229 all-purpose yards.

Saint Francis is an NAIA school in Fort Wayne, Ind.

• In a Thursday game televised on ESPNU, Texas Southern running back Marcus Wright (Dunbar) scored a TD on one of his 12 carries in a 24-21 loss to Alabama A&M.

• Sophomore midfielder Miles Alexander (Bellbrook) assisted on each goal in Marietta College's 3-3 double-overtime soccer draw with Mount Union last Saturday.
