Dayton Flyers reach 2-0 with rout of Charleston Southern

The Dayton Flyers routed Charleston Southern 90-61 in the second game of the season Saturday at UD Arena.

Obi Toppin scored 21 points on 10-of-13 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds. Rodney Chatman and Ryan Mikesell each scored 14. Jalen Crutcher had 12, and Trey Landers had 10.

Chatman led Dayton with eight assists and had five of the team’s 17 turnovers.

Dayton improved to 2-0 and will play Nebraska Omaha at 7 p.m. Tuesday in its final test before the Maui Invitational (Nov. 25-27).

The Flyers shot 60.7 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from 3-point range. They made 28 of 37 shots (75.7 percent) inside the arc.

The Buccaneers shot 43.8 percent from 3-point range (7 of 16). Dontrell Shuler scored 24 points.

FIRST-HALF RECAP

Dayton started the first half strong and ended it in similar fashion, building a 46-33 halftime lead.

Dayton outscored the Buccaneers 14-0 in the first four minutes only to give up a 16-4 run in the next four minutes. The Flyers led 36-31 with four minutes to play and then began a 10-2 run.

Toppin dunked five times and led the Flyers with 13 points. He received a technical foul for hanging on the rim after his second dunk.

Chatman scored 11 points. Landers had eight. Crutcher had seven.

Landers made his first start of the season, replacing Chase Johnson, who started the season opener against Indiana State.

Charleston Southern, which shot 18 percent from 3-point range in its first three games, made 5 of 9 (55.6 percent) in the first half. Shuler scored 15 points.

Dayton committed nine turnovers in the half and shot 3 of 11 from 3-point range but made 17 of 21 shots from inside the arc.
