Springfield senior Davis wins county’s top basketball honor

Danny Davis was a star for Springfield’s basketball team from his first game as a freshman in 2013 to his final game last month.

Though Davis is Springfield’s all-time leading scorer with 1,774 points, it was made clear at the 40th annual Clark County coaches’ basketball banquet on Monday night at Wittenberg University that what most of his teammates and friends will remember him for is his unselfishness.

Davis was honored with the Dan Hoyt Clark County Mr. Basketball award at the banquet, the latest in a number of honors for the Wisconsin-bound football player . He averaged 18.2 points and 6.6 rebounds, but Springfield coach Isaiah Carson said Davis' most telling stat was 5.7 assists per game.

“I can remember telling Danny as a freshman to be more aggressive,” Carson said. “Even this season, I had to tell him to be more aggressive at times, because it was better for the team. He was just such a team player and always tried to get his teammates involved.”

Davis was not able to attend the event due to participating in senior day activities at Springfield High School — one the few school events he has been able to attend due to sporting events and college recruitment over the last four years. Stepfather Paul Brumfield accepted the award on Davis’ behalf and spoke of his son’s humbleness.

Carson said one instance he’ll most remember about Davis came in a sectional tournament game against Xenia in March. Springfield trailed the Buccaneers by double digits in the second half, and Davis fouled out shortly after.

“It wasn’t looking good, and he could have went to the end of the bench and pouted and moaned,” Carson said. “He didn’t do that. All he did was come to my side of the bench and take my seat at the front, and he was the biggest cheerleader for our guys. He understood that it wasn’t about him, and it was about the team and the program. He was even in my ear trying to give me pointers.”

Springfield senior Michael McKay and junior Leonard Taylor were all named to the all-county team. McKay averaged 14.6 points per game and has seen increased recruiting interest in the last month, mostly from Division II schools. He said he will pick a university in the next two months.

“This was a blessing, and I couldn’t have gotten here without my teammates,” McKay said. “I feel like God put them in my life for this reason. They showed me how to be a better person.”

Carson was named the county coach of the year, while Springfield senior Kris Harris and Kenton Ridge coach Kris Spriggs received sportsmanship awards.

Other players on the all-county team are: Billy Lord, Shawnee; Clay Mastin, Tecumseh; Casey Hayes, Northeastern; Cossy Catanzaro, Catholic Central; Andrew Lyons and Trevor King, Southeastern; Jameel Cosby, Kenton Ridge; Kurt Waters, Northwestern.
