When it came to coaching Shawnee’s Jaden Greenwood, Braves coach Chris McGuire knew what he was going to get from his senior standout.
On Monday night, though, Greenwood had no idea what he was going to get from his coach.
Greenwood was honored with the Dan Hoyt Mr. Basketball award at the Clark County Basketball Coaches banquet at Wittenberg University’s Shouvlin Center. Greenwood, a three-time All-Clark County team member, is Shawnee’s seventh Mr. Basketball and second in three seasons joining Jaelin Williams in 2013.
“He’s kind of that rock on the basketball team,” McGuire said prior to the banquet. “You know what you’re going to get every day in practice. You know what you’re going to get in a game. He really understands the system that we’re trying to run. He’s really an extension of the coach on the floor.”
The award is voted on by county boys basketball coaches and, according to organizers, goes beyond the statistics. Leadership, classroom achievement, community leadership and respect of coaches and competitors are also taken into consideration.
Greenwood — the program’s first four-year letter winner along with senior Andrew Tincher — led the Braves with 17.3 points. He averaged 4.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.2 steals. He helped guide Shawnee to four straight Central Buckeye Conference titles, two sectional championships and a 77-22 record overall.
The Braves finished the season 20-6 and reached the Division II district final before falling to Franklin.
“He had kind of that ‘it’ factor,” McGuire said. “You can’t necessarily teach it, you can’t necessarily explain it. He did everything I asked. From that standpoint he’s a kid every coach dreams of having.”
Off the court, Greenwood is a member of the National Honor Society and Student Council.
“He really was a big-time catalyst of that success,” McGuire said. “He had a lot of support around him but he was a major part of what we were doing. Very special kid, very special player. We’re really going to miss him.”
McGuire and Greenon’s Todd Shuttleworth were named Clark County co-coaches of the year.
The Southwest Ohio Officials Association Sportsmanship Award was presented to Catholic Central’s Quinton Howard and Emmanuel Christian coach Dan Moore.
Clark County’s Miss Basketball will be announced at the girls All-County banquet tonight.
