“It feels great. I’ve been working for it all year and it’s starting to pay off,” Glass said.

Glass won the 100-meter dash in 10.98 seconds, just 0.04 seconds off Scott’s record set in 2018. Glass won the 200 in 21.96 to break Scott’s mark of 22.22 set last year, too.
Glass won the 400 in 49.48, topping the 50.73 Catholic Central’s Brandon Roberts ran in 2001. Glass also won the high jump with 6-04, tying the record held by Tecumseh’s Donte Clark (2015) and Northeastern’s Max Queen (2017). His personal record is 6-7.
“Today I didn’t think I’d run the times that I did. I kind of surprised myself,” Glass said. “In the high jump it just got in my head. My legs were dead.”
In all, seven meet records were broken or tied. Glass nearly made it eight but said he stumbled about 15 meters into the 100. He still set a personal record.
Not bad for someone who didn’t even want to run track in junior high. Glass has gone from that reluctant runner to a must-see competitor who sends a buzz through the crowd.
“My mom. She made me sign up eighth grade year,” Glass said of his start in track. “I really didn’t want to do it, but ever since then I’ve loved it. … I like to set an example for other people. Push and push yourself to get better because at one point I was just like everyone else. I pushed myself to be better and I got here with hard work.”
Tecumseh won the girls team championship with 143 points, topping runner-up Springfield’s 121. Springfield won the boys team title with a 137-108 victory over runner-up Shawnee.
Also at the Clark County championships:
• Springfield freshman Lauren Tate started throwing the shot put about three weeks ago. On her final throw Tuesday she unleashed an effort of 36 feet, 5.5 inches, breaking the meet record of 35-7 set by South’s Jasmine Bray in 2001.
“(My coaches and teammates) were telling me you can do it. In my mind I was not going to do it,” Tate said. “When I threw 36 I was like what?!?”
Tate said she threw the shot when she was younger and even qualified for the state meet. But in recent seasons she had taken up sprints.
“Running wasn’t for me,” she said. “I was losing a lot. I wanted to try something new. … When I was little (my dad) always used to push me to do things like push-ups. I’ve always been a little Hercules. I’ve always been strong.”
She gets it naturally, too. Tate’s father is Lars Tate, who led the Georgia Bulldogs in rushing in 1988 and 1989 and was a second-round pick in the NFL draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Her brother, Donovan, was drafted third overall in the 2009 MLB draft by the San Diego Padres.
• Springfield senior Austin Tyree swept the boys hurdles, including setting a meet record in the 300 hurdles. He won in 39.05 to break the mark of 39.60 by South’s Jonathon Glass in 2001.
• Northwestern junior Korbin Spencer set a meet record in the discus with 167-02. That surpassed the 158-09 by Shawnee’s Scott Warnock in 2001.
• Greenon junior Cameron Algren established a new pole vault record after clearing 14-02, breaking the 13-0 mark set by Shawnee’s Justin Mattern in 2001.
• Springfield senior Tiffany Moss scored victories in the 100 hurdles (15.76) and the long jump (15-09).
• Greenon junior Delaney Benedict won the girls 200 and 400 dashes for the second straight year. She won the 200 in 26.36 and the 400 in 1:00.10.
• Tecumseh junior Kylee Mastin grabbed a pair of wins in the 800 (2:25.18) and the 1,600 (5:36.16).
• Also winning girls individual titles were Tecumseh junior Jaci Rife (100), Tecumseh freshman Mae Mastin (300 hurdles), Shawnee freshman Audrey DeSantis (3,200), Springfield junior Camryn Rakestraw (high jump), Emmanuel Christian junior Sydney McClain (discus) and Shawnee junior Jace Mitchem (pole vault).
• Additional boys individual champions were Tecumseh senior Ethan Adams (1,600), Greenon sophomore Gavin Patrick (3,200), Northeastern senior Max Queen (long jump) and Northwestern senior Adam Riedinger (shot).
