Nine area high school boys basketball teams will join top teams from across the state and country at the 21st Beacon Orthopaedics Flyin’ to the Hoop at Trent Arena in Kettering.

Flyin’ president Eric Horstman announced the schedule for the four-day hoops showcase Tuesday at the Dayton Marriott. The 19-game event is scheduled for Jan. 12-15, 2024.

Dunbar, Miami East, Alter, Middletown, Beavercreek, Wayne, Centerville, Preble Shawnee and Fairmont are the area teams in the field.

“Two of the reasons I put this event on, one is for the area and the economic impact that this event has for the Dayton area during January. and also, for the local players to have a chance to play on a national stage,” Horstman said

According to the tournament, the event has an economic impact of $1.9 million to the local economy.

Centerville, a Division I state semifinalist last season and the Division I state champs in 2021, will face Isidore Newman (La.) in a marquee matchup on Sunday. Newman is the alma matter of the Manning brothers — Peyton and Eli. The Elks are led by senior Jonathan Powell, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard who is a Xavier commit.

Alter, a D-II regional finalist last season, will face Westminster Academy (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) in the final game on Saturday night. Westminster is led by junior combo guard Alex Lloyd, a four-star recruit who has an offer from the University of Dayton. Alter junior R.J. Greer, who transferred from Springboro, is one of the top recruits in Ohio in the Class of 2025.

Fairmont, a Division I district finalist last season, will play on its home floor to close out the event on Monday. The Firebirds will face Sycamore, which is led by 6-10 center Raleigh Burgess, a Purdue commit. The Firebirds beat Burgess and the Aviators in the 2022 district finals.

Wayne, playing in the event for the 18th straight year, will face Rocky River Lutheran West, a D-II state finalist last season, on Sunday afternoon. The Warriors were a D-I district finalist last season.

“We are always humbled to be part of this event,” Wayne coach Nathan Martindale said. “To be able to represent the Dayton area and Dayton basketball ... it’s an amazing situation for us.”

Dunbar, which reached the D-II regional semifinals last season, kicks off the Saturday schedule against Walnut Ridge. That game is followed by Miami East facing Wayne Trace in another all-Ohio matchup.

Middletown kicks off the Sunday slate against Newport (Ky.). That game is followed by Beavercreek vs. Cincinnati Woodward.

“I’m excited to be competing in this event and I know our guys are,” said first-year Middletown coach Bill Edwards Jr. “We’re excited to be back and give our fans the opportunity to watch our guys on a national stage.”

Preble Shawnee, a D-III regional finalist last season, faces Lloyd Memorial (Erlanger, Ky.) in the first game on Monday. The Arrows are led by 6-5 guard Mason Shrout, a Purdue Fort Wayne commit.

Two Ohio state champs — Lutheran East (Division III) and Richmond Heights (Division IV) — from last season are in the field.

Faith Family Academy (Texas), Westminster Academy, Oak Ridge (Fla.), Combine Academy (N.C.) and Canyon Academy (Ariz.) are the top national teams. Among participating players, there are six five-star recruits and 20-plus four-star recruits.
