The Ohio High School Athletic Association sent a memo to schools on Friday regarding the eligibility of student-athletes in the fall.

“Due to the wide-range of academic grades being given for classwork during the final grading period,” the memo read, “all students entering grades 7-12 will be eligible for 2020 fall sports insofar as academic eligibility is concerned."

This adjustment to the OHSAA bylaws was made in response to the coronavirus pandemic, which resulted in schools around the state closing in March and moving to online classes.

Earlier in the spring, the OHSAA was asking schools to consider using the grades from the third grading period if they were not issuing grades for the fourth grading period this spring. Some schools were going to pass/fail grading.

“The grades the students received at the end of the 3rd grading period would be what you use to determine their eligibility for fall sports,” an OHSAA press release read. “This would essentially be turning your 3rd grading period into your 2nd semester or final grading period of the 2019-2020 school year.”
