TV cameras caught Schiano and Day exchanging words. Both were flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, but Day said after the game there were no hard feelings and he maintains high respect for Schiano, who shared the Ohio State coaching staff with him in 2017 and ‘18.
“Just one coach defending one side and one coach defending theirs,” Day said.
Day also clarified that no fake punt was called.
“They came after the punt and Jesse just rolled to the right,” Day said. “That was nothing we had ever worked on. When he saw it, he’s a football player, he took it and then took that shot on the sideline.”
Schiano told reporters in his postgame press conference he and Day are good friends and there is no issue between them.
“My player was in a sea of Ohio State players, and it was closing fast,” Schiano said. “I wanted to make sure of two things. I wanted to stop our team from coming across the field. That’s how things get very ugly. And I wanted to make sure our player got out of there safely.”
