Northmont grad leaves Wisconsin, enters transfer portal

Markus Allen caught his first touchdown pass earlier this month

Northmont High School graduate Markus Allen, a redshirt freshman wide receiver at Wisconsin, announced Sunday night he’s entering the transfer portal.

“First want to thank everyone in the Wisconsin Football program for everything they’ve done up to this point,” Allen said in a statement released on Twitter. “For helping me academically and athletically from the strength staff all the way down to the trainers. Truly love the bonds I’ve made with great people and the memories with brothers. Thank you Coach (Paul) Chryst & the Coaching Staff for giving me an opportunity at the University of Wisconsin. With that being said I would like to announce that I have officially entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. With 3 years remaining of NCAA Eligibility.”

Allen caught seven passes for 91 yards in six games and had a 19-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter against Northwestern on Oct. 8. He did not play in a 34-28 loss to Michigan State on Saturday.

Wisconsin (3-4, 1-3) is in last place in the Big Ten West Division. Coach Paul Chryst was fired after five games.

Chryst talked about Allen during Big Ten Media Days last summer.

“Markus is talented,” Chryst said. “I like Markus. I think football is important to him. I’m excited for fall camp. It was good he got a ton of reps in spring, and he’s done a good job this summer. He’s lost some weight.”

Allen originally committed to Michigan in April 2020 but reopened his recruitment later that in September, early in his senior season at Northmont. He signed with Wisconsin in December 2020.

Allen appeared in two games as a freshman in his first season at Wisconsin. He caught three passes for 65 yards.
