Mini sprints racer Loney wins 1st points title

Catholic Central junior says consistency got him to top of mini-sprints.

SPRINGFIELD — It took Garry Loney one season to get situated at Waynesfield Motorsports Park. After finishing third in the 600 winged mini-sprints points race last season, Loney learned how to be smooth in the car. He figured out what lines to run and how to give better feedback in setting up the car.

A year later, all those things helped Loney, a Catholic Central High School junior, bring home his first points title. He finished second in the final race on Sunday, Sept. 27, to seal the championship.

“I was pretty happy,” Loney said. “That was my goal going into the year. I’m glad I got it done and over with. I’m ready to win some more.”

Loney won just one race en route to the title, but he said the key was consistency.

“I had a lot of top threes. There was only one race I finished out of the top five,” he said.

Next year, Loney is hoping to move up to the 1000 Mini-Sprint class. He hopes to race 20-30 events next year in either the American Mini Sprints Association or the Midwest Mini Sprints Association.

Loney, who also won a race at 35 Raceway Park this summer, was sponsored by the Jeff Wyler Automall, the Ohio Department of Public Safety, and Dr. Jonathan Paley from Dayton Orthopaedic Surgery.

Loney said he got plenty of setup help from Ron Coleman, a former mini-sprints driver, as well as his father, Dan.

“Every now and then, I get to get in there and do some stuff,” Loney said. “I love working on the cars just as much as I do racing them.”
