Miamisburg’s Shannon McIntosh has won close races in her career, but now she’s going for a photo finish of a different kind.
McIntosh, 21, is one of five finalists competing for the cover of Seventeen magazine. The winner will appear on the October 2011 cover featuring the magazine’s “Pretty Amazing Real-Girl” contest.
“This is surreal,” said McIntosh. “The fact that I am one of five out of the 35,000 entries blows my mind. This will be a great outlet to share my story about why and how you can do anything you put your mind to with hard work and dedication. Just like in racing, I’m in this to win.”
McIntosh is 10th in points in the USF2000 National Championship series — a ladder series to IZOD IndyCar Series — following her 10th-place finish at the Night Before the 500 at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis last Saturday.

Winchester postpones
The Night of Destruction and Thrills show at Winchester Speedway scheduled for Saturday has been postponed.
“It’s my intention to give spectators the best show money can buy,” Winchester owner Charlie Shaw said on the track website. “Due to scheduling issues, we’ve had several venues who could not make our show. Instead of short-changing our fans, we’ve made the decision to postpone and reschedule the event for later in the season, when all parties can make the show and provide the great entertainment to the fans.”
Indy update
Readers noted a few Miami Valley additions to last week’s Indianapolis 500 stories celebrating the 100th anniversary.
Lebanon’s Harlan Fengler, the longtime Indy 500 steward, also had one start as a driver. He started 19th and finished 16th in the 1923 race.
Also, Oakwood brothers Bob and Gene Shannon — who owned Shannon Buick on Salem Avenue — provided the ride Duke Dinsmore drove to a 17th-place finish after starting 33rd in 1956.
And George F. Heller entered a car in 1951 with LeRoy Warringer driving, but they were still in line waiting to bump their way into the field when rain washed out the rest of qualifying.
Mahaffey tops in Ohio
Dayton’s Donald Mahaffey Jr. leads Ohio in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late model points standings. Mahaffey, who competes at both Kil-Kare Speedway and Columbus Motor Speedway, has 210 points.
West Virginia’s Travis Braden is second (208) and Beavercreek’s Brandon Oakley is third (202). Both are late model rookies and race at Kil-Kare and Columbus.
