Miamisburg sprint car driver Shannon McIntosh has dedicated her life to someday running side-by-side with IndyCar Series competitors Sarah Fisher and Tony Kanaan.

Until she gets that break — i.e. sponsorship — she’s rubbing shoulders with them.

McIntosh is in Indianapolis this week for Indy 500 festivities, including the CARA Charities fashion show and luncheon hosted by Fisher and Kanaan today, May 27.

On Wednesday, McIntosh was in Charlotte, N.C., battling NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Jeff Gordon and about 100 other go-kart drivers at the Dare To Race Jeff Gordon charity event benefitting Gordon’s Children’s Hospital. McIntosh was invited by event sponsor Pacific Technical Resources to race for its team and rewarded PTR with a top-12 finish.

“They’re like, we’re in it to win it, so I said I’m game,” McIntosh said.

The same attitude goes for her sprint career. McIntosh said she has a deal on the table with legendary chassis builder Bob East and plans to run with the USAC national midgets at O’Reilly Raceway Park on July 22.

She’s planning to run Ford Focus events this summer while also doing promotional work for USAC.

What McIntosh really wants is sponsorship. Finding a ride is no longer about talent alone. It’s about talent and how much money you can bring with you.

“It totally is that way. It’s about marketability,” McIntosh said. “I get really frustrated because I’m doing all these things and the whole reason is for racing. I’m out there and getting recognition for racing, but sometimes it is a little discouraging because I haven’t been in a (racing) suit as much as I’ve wanted. With all the great people surrounding me — my family and I have a lot of people in the industry that are really pulling for me — I have a lot of people I couldn’t thank enough.”
