XENIA — Since he started racing in 1979, Kettering’s Mike Carroll admits he’s lost count of his track titles. His next one, though, might be just around the corner.

Carroll’s consistency at Kil-Kare Speedway has him atop the modifieds points. He holds a 36-point lead over Beavercreek’s Jack Jones — despite two fewer wins — entering Open Wheel tonight, July 17, at the Greene County track.

The special night features the American Modified Series, Buckeye Super Sprints and USAC Ford Focus Midgets. Carroll won the AMS title in 2007 and finished second last year. He hooked up with legendary Beavercreek car owner Paul Storer this season for a run at the Kil-Kare track title.

“We were concentrating on the bigger paying races, and the opportunity came up with Paul,” Carroll said. “He wanted to try and win the track championship again. We figured we’d give it a whirl. ... He’s got a lot of knowledge and he’s been around racing for a long time. It’s kind of neat being involved with him. That’s been a real treat for us.”

Troy’s Greg Stapleton won the AMS event at Kil-Kare last season. A crew consisting of Keith Boothe, Bill Chambers, Storer and twin sons Brad and Joe look to get the No. 5 (sponsored by Storco Construction, McDonald’s, Jim Chrisman, Chambers Signs and Moore’s Trucking) modified out front tonight.

“Paul’s raced forever and a day, and a lot of good drivers have driven for him. He’s got good equipment and a great crew,” Carroll said.

Fleming leads Ohio

Xenia’s Ryan Fleming, a member of the Miami Valley Quarter Midget Racing Association, helped Ohio claim six division championships at USAC’s Battle at the Brickyard last week.

More than 200 drivers competed in front of the Pagoda at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Fleming captured both the Heavy B and Heavy AA titles, and received a USAC feature winner medallion and trophy.

Reitenour on a roll

Former Miamisburg resident Megan Reitenour will participate in the Jeff Gordon Foundation bowling tournament Thursday in Indianapolis. Reitenour and three other NASCAR Driver for Diversity drivers will team up for the celebrity event that benefits the Riley Hospital for Children.
