Dayton’s Pat Dakin will be looking for a little home-state advantage when the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series roars into Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk this weekend.

Dakin enters the Norwalk show — the 13th event on the schedule — sitting at No. 13 in Top Fuel points. The top 10 drivers after 17 events qualify for the 10-race Countdown to 1 championship.

Dakin is 215 points out of 10th place.

Dakin, who suffered injuries during an accident in Topeka, Kan., in 1998, started running with the NHRA again last season. Career highlights include national event wins in 1971 and 1973 and a runner-up finish to Shirley Muldowney in Top Fuel points in 1977.

Support class qualifying started Thursday, June 24 while Top Fuel qualifying — and other top classes — fire up today.

Henderson, Mahaffey battle for Ohio points lead

Franklin’s Sloan Henderson and Dayton’s Don Mahaffey Jr. continue to battle for the Ohio points lead in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Late Model series.

Henderson, who lists Columbus Motor Speedway as her home track but is also a Kil-Kare Speedway regular, has 232 points entering this weekend. In 14 starts she has 10 Top-5 finishes and 12 Top-10s.

Mahaffey, who lists Kil-Kare as home, has 197 points on the strength of five wins in nine starts. He also has seven Top-5 finishes.

Henderson, meanwhile, is making a push to increase her Facebook fans. Those who wish to join can search Sloan Henderson Motorsports on Facebook.

Ohio Speedweek winds down

Two races remain to decide the 28th annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek champion. Limaland Motorsports Park hosts the eighth leg tonight and Fremont Speedway caps the event Saturday.

David Gravel, Tim Shaffer and Dale Blaney held the top three spots entering Thursday’s action at Sharon Speedway.

Brad Sweet won at Waynesfield Raceway Park on Wednesday.
