Mixon sporting different look at minicamp

Joe Mixon put up some huge numbers at Oklahoma, but it’s been the dwindling of digits that has been his most impressive showing in his first month with the Cincinnati Bengals.

The second-round pick checked in for rookie camp at 238 pounds. He begins mandatory minicamp Tuesday at 228.

“That was that traveling weight, eating good,” Mixon laughed, referring to the pre-draft process of flying across the country to visit with numerous teams.

Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis didn’t hesitate to point out Mixon’s weight when he was asked at the end of rookie camp what stood about Mixon.

“That he spent too much time traveling around visiting teams,” Lewis said. “He needs to get in shape again.”

Mixon said he typically plays around 223-228 and that the weigh in at 238 came as a bit of a shock.

“I’ll never be that big again. Never,” he said. “Honestly, I was just working out hard and lifting heavy, so I started bulking up. Once I started running a lot, I started trimming down.

“I just watched my diet a little more and I ran a lot,” he said. “A lot of cardio. Like hundreds for a set. Right now I feel great.”
