Urban Myer: ‘The time is right’ to make jump to NFL with Jaguars

Former Ohio State coach will coach at pro level for first time

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced the hiring of former Ohio State Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer as their head coach Thursday. He’s the sixth permanent head coach in franchise history.

“I’m ready to coach the Jacksonville Jaguars,” Meyer said in a statement. “Jacksonville has an enthusiastic fan base, and the fans deserve a winning team. With upcoming opportunities in the NFL Draft, and strong support from ownership, the Jaguars are well-positioned to become competitive. I’ve analyzed this decision from every angle — the time is right in Jacksonville, and the time is right for me to return to coaching. I’m excited about the future of this organization and our long term prospect for success.”

Meyer, 56, first met with the Jaguars last week. The Jaguars, who finished 1-15 last season, have the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft. They fired coach Doug Marrone after the season. He was 23-43 in four seasons.

“This is a great day for Jacksonville and Jaguars fans everywhere,” Jaguars owner Shad Khan said in a statement. “Urban Meyer is who we want and need, a leader, winner and champion who demands excellence and produces results. While Urban already enjoys a legacy in the game of football that few will ever match, his passion for the opportunity in front of him here in Jacksonville is powerful and unmistakable.”

Meyer last coached the Buckeyes in the 2018 season and has since worked as an analyst for FOX and as an assistant athletics director at Ohio State.

In 17 years as a head coach at the college level, Meyer was 187-32. He won two national championships with the Florida Gators and one with Ohio State.

Meyer announced he would step down at Ohio State in December 2018 and was replaced by Ryan Day. Meyer coached his last game against Washington in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 2019.
