Boys soccer: Tippecanoe earns second straight berth in state title game

The Tippecanoe High School boys soccer team beat Albany Alexander 4-1 on Thursday at Westerville North High School in a Division II state semifinal, earning its second straight trip to the state championship game.

Tippecanoe took a 1-0 lead with 24:25 left in the first half when Jackson Kleather headed in a long throw-in from Owen Hadden. With the game tied at 1-1, Andrew Baileys scored with 13:09 left in the half. John Miller scored on a head ball with 5:19 left in the half to give the Red Devils a 3-1 halftime lead.

With 29 minutes left in the game, Tippecanoe extended its lead to 4-1 Blake Heeley headed in a corner kick by Jake Smith.

Clay Vaughn made five saves in goal.

Tippecanoe (23-0) will play Warren Howland (21-0-1) for the second straight year in the state championship game. The teams will play at 4 p.m. Saturday at MAPFRE Stadium in Columbus. Tippecanoe beat Howland 1-0 last season to claim its first state championship.

Howland advanced with a 3-0 victory against Lima Shawnee at Lexington High School.

Tippecanoe will take a 47-game unbeaten streak into the state championship game. It finished 23-0-1 last season.
