Hartsock: What I learned from Week 2 of high school football

What I learned from week two of high school football:

Tough start for three big schools

It’s something I’m not sure has ever happened before. Centerville, Fairmont and Wayne all starting a season 0-2. Now granted there is a lot of football to be played in the next two months, but this trio is certainly facing some issues.

Fairmont’s defense has done a decent job, but the Firebirds offense has scored two touchdowns in two games and they have yet to complete a pass.

Centerville is just the opposite, the Elks have a quarterback in Chase Harrison who can throw it, but they have 63 yards rushing in two games.

Wayne has been close in both games. The Warriors had a third-quarter lead last Friday at Olentangy Liberty, and they were down two with under four minutes to play against Colerain but couldn’t come up with the plays when it counted.

Snapping the skid won’t be easy this week. Fairmont is at Northmont and Wayne travels to Trotwood. Centerville seems to have the easiest road. The Elks are home for the first time this season against 0-2 Dunbar.

Bulldogs have some bite

Milton-Union is off to a fast start. Bret Pearce is 2-0 in the second season of his second stint in West Milton. The Bulldogs have scored 97 points in the first two weeks of the season.

Leading the way is a trio of seniors in the backfield. Quarterback Nathan Brumbaugh leads the Southwestern Buckeye League with four touchdown passes, while running backs A.J. Lovin and Kayge Thwaits are a dual threat on the ground.

The Bulldogs are home the next two weeks, hosting Springfield Northwestern this Friday and then up against a much-improved Northridge team a week later.

Glass sparkles for Shawnee

Robie Glass is any coaches dream. Give him the ball and he makes things happen. The senior led Springfield Shawnee to a 42-24 win over Tipp last Thursday night, doing it with his arms and his legs.

Glass was a perfect 9-of-9 passing for 178 yards while rushing for 110 yards and touchdown.

In two games the Shawnee signal-caller is leading the Central Buckeye Conference with 348 yards rushing and second in passing with 283 yards.

If you want to catch Glass in person, he and the Braves are at Welcome Stadium on Friday night against Thurgood Marshall.
