Greeneview takes its best shot at Greene County invite

When it comes to throwing the shot and discus, Greeneview High School senior Jaron Stoneburner’s philosophy is simple but effective: “I just go throw, honestly.”

Stoneburner’s approach helped him win his sixth shot put victory in eight meets, capturing the title at the Greene County Championships on Thursday at Beavercreek High School. Stoneburner also has four discus wins, but Thursday he was edged by sophomore teammate Nick Milo.

“We push each other. It’s great,” Stoneburner said. “He’s probably my biggest role model and I’m probably his. He’s even taught me some things.”

Stoneburner won the shot with a throw of 46 feet, 11 inches to beat runner-up and senior teammate Levi Rudduck’s 43-8.

Milo – the state’s No. 2-ranked Division II sophomore – won the discus with 139-05 to Stoneburner’s 139-02.

Stoneburner and Milo were among four Rams who scored victories along with Kevin Combs in the boys 100 hurdles and McKyna Woods in the girls 400 meters. Greeneview’s girls finished third in the team standings with 121 points, trailing Beavercreek (165) and Bellbrook (160). Greeneview’s boys team finished fifth with 71.5 points. Bellbrook won with 147.5.

Cedarville also competed and claimed five boys victories. Brandon Pollock won the 200, Trent Koning won the 800, Ethan Wells the 1,600, Trey Gruet the 300 hurdles and Ben Tarwater the long jump. The Indians boys finished third and the girls seventh.

As for the Rams, the girls’ third-place finish was the first time they hadn’t won or placed second. Coming into Thursday they had two meet victories and a pair of runner-up finishes. The boys haven’t finished lower than fourth in any invitational.

“It’s really cool to have a lot of great athletes and great coaches at our school that push us,” said Woods, who set a personal record in the 400 (1:05.27) and finished third in both the 100 (13.13) and 200 (27.73) with PR efforts. “It feels awesome (to be a county champion). I feel really proud of myself and my teammates.”

Greeneview’s girls team has 24 athletes and the boys team 21. The numbers aren’t huge, but the Rams are loaded with depth.

Senior Hannah Ferrell and junior Audrey Ackerman are strong in the throws. Senior Alex Hansen is a top hurdler and high jumper. Junior Faith Rutherford excels in sprints and pole vault. Freshmen Laney Hines is a triple threat at sprints, hurdles and long jump, while fellow freshman Sarah Trisel is a strong high jumper.

“Coach always says this is a team sport,” Stoneburner said, “but you have to have that self motivation and encouragement to do your events.”

And a little push from teammates when needed is welcomed with the Rams. That’s what Stoneburner and Milo hope to keep doing all the way to the state meet at Columbus.

“We go back and forth,” Stoneburner said of who usually comes out on top at events. “Competition for you is great. It pushes you. It really helps.”
