Bengals could target pass rusher Mincey in free agency

With the start of NFL free agency looming, teams are already preparing to raid Cincinnati’s cupboard of free agents.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss is reporting the New England Patriots could show interest in Bengals defensive lineman Jonathan Fanene when free agency begins March 13. There is also talk Miami and Houston could make a hard run at safety Reggie Nelson.

Defensive end Frostee Rucker is another priority signing for Cincinnati, but is likely to draw some interest as well.

The backup plan could be Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Jeremy Mincey, should they lose either Fanene or Rucker.

The 6-foot-3, 270-pound Mincey fits the mold of a Mike Zimmer-type player. He’s versatile, quick off the edge, aggressive and productive. The pass-rusher recorded 57 total tackles and eight sacks for the 2011 season. The Bengals coaching staff had to take notice of Mincey’s performance in the matchup against Jacksonville. He registered five tackles, one sack and was disruptive.

Jacksonville could still place the franchise tag on Mincey and have until 4 p.m. today to do so. It would actually benefit the Jaguars to re-sign him after missing on pass rushers Derek Harvey and Quentin Moses. Mincey is considered one of the more talented and younger free agents on the market at his position.

The Bengals aren’t expected to be major players in free agency but will seek value. Cincinnati made out last year with the signings of free agent linebackers Thomas Howard and Manny Lawson. Can they do it again?
