Dayton Flyers injury update: Will Obi Toppin play against VCU?

Flyers play Rams at 8 p.m. Tuesday at UD Arena

Asked if he was feeling good as he took the court for pregame warmups, Toppin said, “Yes, sir.”

Dayton coach Anthony Grant told WHIO Radio’s Larry Hansgen in a pregame interview Toppin practice Monday without incident and was cleared to play

Toppin suffered the injury with 15 minutes, 12 seconds remaining in the second half. He had 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting at that point, and Dayton led 56-31. Toppin stepped on another player’s foot as he was getting back down the court on offense and fell near midcourt.

“Sprained ankle is the indication right now,” Dayton coach Anthony Grant said in the post-game press conference. “I think the next 24 hours will tell us more in terms of how it reacts, but it was good to see him be able to walk back to the bench under his own power. The last three minutes of the game, he was there in good spirits.”

On Monday, Grant provided an update on Toppin: “We hope to have him available. (He’s) responding well to treatment. The next 24 hours will determine the best course.”

Toppin, a redshirt sophomore forward, leads Dayton in scoring (19.3) and rebounding (7.4).
