“I’m married and have three kids, and those feeling are unparalleled,” Ewald said, “but being out there on game day and being a Wittenberg Tiger is unparalleled, too.”
Ewald has coached defensive linemen, tight ends, wide receivers and running backs over the last 14 years. He is the only assistant coach to be on the staff for head coach Joe Fincham’s entire 14-year tenure.
“I love it,” said Ewald, a Kettering resident and a 1979 graduate of Carroll High School. “I respect Coach Fincham, and I think this program’s special. Just being a part of it is special. There are a lot of sacrifices. My wife has been nice enough and understanding enough to let me keep doing it.”
Ewald has coached football for 30 years, ever since he was 18. He’s coached every age group from pee wee to college with stops at Trotwood-Madison, Carroll and Chaminade Julienne, to name a few.
Earlier in his career at Wittenberg he coached some of the greatest wide receivers to wear the Wittenberg uniform: Russ Fedyk, Michael Aljancic, Jered Glover and Skip Ivery. In 2006 he became running backs coach. Tristan Murray was named North Coast Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year that season.
Guys like Ewald, Fincham said, are worth their weight in gold.
“I would venture to say if you polled every guy on the team, he’s the favorite coach,” Fincham said. “He’s an energetic guy. You never see him show up kicking the can about anything. He loves the game of football. He’s as loyal as the day is long. He’s genuinely fun to be around.”
