Although there were unconfirmed reports that Georgia Tech was pursuing Richmond coach Chris Mooney, whose season just ended with an NCAA Sweet 16 loss Friday, Goodman is standing by his story.
“He’s definitely been offered, and my gut says he’ll take it,” Goodman said. “From what I’m hearing from people close to him, he’ll take it as long as the money is right, as long as they don’t low-ball him.”
Georgia Tech, which had to pay $7.2 million in a buyout settlement to fired coach Paul Hewitt and is renovating its arena, reportedly only wants to spend $1.5 million annually on its entire coaching staff. Gregory’s total compensation is close to $1 million per year, and the Yellow Jackets’ limit could be a sticking point.
Gregory has a 172-94 record at UD with five postseason appearances. Although he’s gone just 70-58 in the Atlantic 10, he has a 12-5 mark against schools from power conferences in the last four seasons, including a win over Georgia Tech.
