“Some of those guys who committed to Sean, we started on them the very first day we were there,” he said. “They were just young guys. That was the method to the madness — get in early on a lot of those guys.”
Miller has only been at UD since April and didn’t have time to work that strategy with the 2012 class at his new post, but he still was thrilled with the recruits who signed.
Devon Scott, a 6-foot-9, 220-pound power forward, turned in his national letter-of-intent on Monday afternoon, joining two signees from last week: Columbus Northland teammate Jalen Robinson, a 6-8 forward, and New York City point guard Jevon Thomas, who plays for Quality Education Academy in North Carolina.
“Devon adds a big piece to the three-man class we’ve signed in the fall so far,” Miller said. “He brings a different element to our team that we desperately need, which is interior toughness and presence and someone that has a high-motor inside and can rebound the ball.
“The thing we love about him most is he plays to win and also has great passion to get better. He knows he’s far from what he can be.”
Miller has signed six recruits since his arrival, and all of them have BCS ties. Scott de-committed from Cincinnati, Robinson from West Virginia and Thomas from St. John’s.
Freshman Alex Gavrilovic was once committed to Providence, while Georgetown transfer Vee Sanford and LSU transfer Matt Derenbecker also are on the team this year.
“Some of the kids may not have been ready to go to a school like that — either maturity-wise or just talent. I don’t know the history,” Miller said. “But I do know these kids were all upper-echelon high school players.”
The Flyers have two scholarships left and are still recruiting Dunbar senior forward Deontae Hawkins and senior wing Kedar Edwards of West Oaks Academy in Florida, among others. Miller said he’d like to hold at least one scholarship back for potential college transfers.
