UD’s Krabacher named A-10 volleyball player of year

A record six players earn postseason honors for the league champs.

University of Dayton junior outside hitter Rachel Krabacher was named the Atlantic 10 volleyball player of the year, junior Samantha Selsky was selected the conference’s setter of the year, and Kelly Sheffield was tabbed as coach of the year for the second consecutive season, the league announced Thursday.

Sophomore middle blocker Megan Campbell joined Krabacher and Selsky on the first team. Senior Yvonne Marten and junior Paige Vargas were named to the second team, while freshman Isolde Hannan was selected to the all-rookie team.

Asked what it means to be named the top coach, Sheffield said: “It means I’ve got Rachel Krabacher on my team. That’s going to make a coach a whole lot better and a whole lot smarter — when you’ve got talented players on your team.

“You see the all-conference team is peppered with Flyers. We’ve got a lot of talent. They’ve worked very, very hard to have the season they’ve had. Fortunately, our coaches get a little bit of recognition because of that.”

The Flyers, who won the regular-season A-10 crown, set a program record with six players earning postseason league honors.

“It’s great to be named player of the year. I wasn’t even on the all-conference team last season,” Krabacher said. “Coach has helped us a lot this year. We’ve worked really, really hard to get where we are. It’s a great honor.”
